Droogs - Stone Cold World & Kingdom Day (1984-1987- Us great mix of garage & neo-psychedelic rock - Wave)

Los Angeles-based band, The Droogs's greatest success has come in Europe. While their garage band approach has yet to capture an American audience, their recordings have received an enthusiastic response overseas. German record label, Music Maniac, reissued their albums, Mad Dog Dreams and Guerrilla Love-In, and released a compilation of their singles, Anthology. Their 1997 album, Atomic Garage, was released by the Spain-based Impossible Records label.
Formed in the early-1970s, the Droogs chose a cover of Sonic's "He's Waiting" for their debut single in 1973. Their second single, released five years later, "Set My Love On You", showcased the songwriting of vocalist Ric Albin and his brother and guitarist, Roger Clay. Other original tunes were included on the multi-artist samplers, Saturday Night Pogo, in 1978, and Ahead Of My Time, the following year.
The Droogs experienced a major change with the arrival of former Textones and Dream Syndicate bassist and keyboards player, Dave Provost in the early-1980s. Provost made his presence felt on a four song EP, Heads Examined, in 1983 and their debut full-length album, Stone Cold World, in 1984.
Although their future appeared secure, after singing with the PVC/Jem label, the Droogs continued to find fame evasive. While touring the Midwest, in support of their 1987 album, Kingdom Day, the label declared bankruptcy and went out of business.
After building a solid following in Europe, the Droogs turned their focus back on the United States, releasing an album, Want Something, in 1990, that included tracks from their European albums and bonus tracks.

Recorded in 1972 and re-mastered by producer Martin Erdman in 2009, this rare recording stands as a defining moment in the history of Australian rock. 

  McPhee 'McPhee' In the pantheon of Australian early 70's progressive rockdom, McPhee must rank as one of its most obscure outfits. McPhee's solitary album appeared to little fanfare in early 1972 and simply sank without trace.
  It's likely that only 500 copies were ever pressed so it rates as a significant rarity. More importantly, 'Mc Phee' stands as one of the great lost treasures of Australias progressive rock era, a truly fascinating artefact of tremendous scope. The tapes have been dusted off so that you can hear this hard-hitting underground masterpiece in all its glory.
  McPhee played the local club and bar cicuit around Sydney and in 1971 entered producer Martin Erdman's World Of Sound studio in order to record an album. The sessions yielded material culled from the bands live repertoire including five cover versions. McPhee's influences extended from the prevailing Acid-rock trends of the day, to the emergent sounds of progressive rock with a smattering of contemporary rock hits.
  From the outset it is clear that McPhee is imbued with a crucial kick and gritty sense of purpose. It is brimming with acidy, wah-wah fuelled lead breaks and some of the most awesomely heavy and stunning Hammond organ playing to be heard anywhere on an Australian album.

Pretty rockin' American psychedelic stuff from 1969. The guitars and the vocals are very impressive especially on the tracks "Sailing" and "Hunter's Moon." After listening to the album a few times, it grows on you and just want to rock out! If there is such a thing as psychedelic metal, "Hunter's Moon" perfects and embodies it. For the most part, it is a great slice of psychedelic hard rock from America. Give props to it's heaviness for 1969.
Excellent album. Every song is five stars, well maybe two are 4, but still better than 98% of late 60's bands. Many of the songs have dark riffs and thundering drums that are echoed in later Metal bands. It's a shame they didn't make any other records. The track Hunter's Moon was worth the price all by it's self.(By GhostWriter)

Fleetwood Mac - The Roundhouse London - UK - April 24th 1970 - Fantastic Sound (Flac)

April 24, 1970 — In early April, when Fleetwood Mac returned to London after an emotional European tour, Peter Green, devastated by drugs, suddenly announced he would be leaving the group in late May. Clifford Davis, the band’s manager, reluctantly began cancelling an upcoming British tour set to begin the following month. Relationships in the stunned band were strained, but the Mac still had to complete recording “The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Prong Crown)”, Peter’s final studio effort with them, as well as a B-side for the single. To underscore the troubled band relationships, Jeremy Spencer opted out of these sessions to work on his own album.
Despite the high tension, the recording sessions at De Lane Lea Studios in London, driven by the intense music, still had their moments. Mick set up his new gong, surrounded by six microphones and miles of cables, in the underground car park below the studio. When Mick banged his gong, that car park vibrated like a giant bell with an eerie ringing that reverberated off the walls. Talk about an echo! Another night, Carlos Santana showed up, and it didn’t take long for a lengthy jam session to start. In the past, Peter often hit upon brilliant melodic ideas in the midst of jams like these, and on this night, he was showing Santana some pretty impressive licks. At some point, Peter had introduced Santana to “Black Magic Woman”, the hit that Carlos would record shortly thereafter for his own band’s second album. Throughout the sessions, Clifford did his best to convince Peter to stay, but Greenie steadfastly maintained his intention to leave, seemingly happier now that his decision was public.

Armageddon - Armageddon (1970 Germany Great Heavy Psychedelic Rock - Flac)

Not to be confused with the UK outfit, this German release from 1970 is an absolute belter of an album. Hard rock with definite progressive and psychedelic edges, the guitar of Frank Diez drives this one all the way.
Why didn't this group record more than just one album? Their self-titled album is a heavy progressive masterpiece with excellent, Hendrix-influenced guitar work and vocals by Frank Diez. Armaggedon was the start of his long and impressive career. Their album had six tracks, and two of them were cover versions. Most impressive was the 10-minute version of Jeff Beck Group's "Rice Pudding". This track had some of the greatest heavy guitar riffing to appear on a German record. Their version of Spooky Tooth's "Better By You, Better Than Me" was also competent enough. In addition, both Frank Diez and Manfred Galatik (electric piano, bass and vocals) wrote great songs, as typified by the tracks "People Talking" and "Open". Michael Nürmberg (bass, rhythm guitar) and Jurgen Lorenzen (drums) provided a strong backing. Armaggedon's album has rocketed in price during recent years, due to the ever increasing interest. However, demand for the group was poor way back in 1970, and Armaggedon soon broke up. Diez never played material with a similar energy again, his next step was to join the 'slightly-above-average' jazz-rockers Emergency.  He later played with Randy Pie, Karthago, Ihre Kinder and Atlantis.  Luckily the Armaggedon album was released on CD in 1991 with a sharp and clean digitally remastered sound (in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies).

    Expressway To Your Skull (1968):
    Although Buddy Miles' alchemical fusion of psychedelia, blues, and soul did not truly coalesce until his masterpiece Them Changes, his debut LP, Expressway to Your Skull, remains an inspired and original statement of intent, a record that's both timeless and an unmistakable product of counterculture consciousness.
    Each of the album's seven songs is a fascinating montage of sounds and styles -- acid-fuzz guitar collides with zig-zagging funk horns, and shrieking keyboards meet juke joint blues riffs head on.
    Not everything works -- a cover of Sam & Dave's "Wrap It Up" is more leaden than lively, and the instrumental "Funky Mule" feels like filler -- but the remaining material is brilliant, its twists and turns navigated by Miles' deeply soulful vocals and monster drumming (by Jason Ankeny).

    Electric Church (1969):
    Buddy Miles' second album (credited to Buddy Miles Express) gets most of its attention in retrospect for the role of Jimi Hendrix, who produced part of it .
    On its own merits, though, it's a fairly respectable soul-rock album. Hendrix was referring to his own material as "electric church" music on some occasions in the late 1960s, and likely he had something like the soul-funk-rock fusion of Band of Gypsys in mind when he conceived this.
    Of course Miles played in Band of Gypsys, and there wasn't any way the music he was writing and singing on his own was going to measure up to what Hendrix was doing.
    On the other hand, here his writing and singing benefit from not being placed within the context of a band in which Hendrix was primarily responsible for those functions (thus leading to inevitable unfavorable comparisons), as was the case on the Band of Gypsys album.
    The songs are mostly vehicles for Miles' high, soulful vocals and the energetic funky arrangements, but as such things go they're pretty solid and pleasurable.
    Naturally for some listeners, the go-to highlights will be &"69 Freedom Special," which has some good Jim McCarty wah-wah licks, and &"Miss Lady," 
    While the majority of this is feel-good and brassy, Miles does show he's capable of handling more tender soul melodies and sentiments in &"Cigarettes & Coffee" and &"My Chant." (by Richie Unterberger).

    ROCKETS HISTORY.... The Rockets were formed in 1972 by former Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels members Johnny "Bee" Badanjek and Jim McCarty. Vocals and drums were handled by Bandajek, McCarty was on lead guitar, John Fraga was on bass and Marc Marcano was on keyboards. Johnny Bee was the driving force and primary songwriter for the Rockets. In the early days, The Rockets paid their dues playing gigs at venues such as, The Rainbow Room and The Peoples Ballroom in Detroit, and The Rock 'N Roll Farm in Wayne Michigan.
    The band took on a new sound in 1976 when David Gilbert was brought in to take over vocals from Johnny Bee. Gilbert had fronted several garage bands and had a brief stint singing for Ted Nugent and The Amboy Dukes in 1971. His drinking and drug habits didn't set too well with the Motor City Madman. Gilbert's raw vocal power proved to be just the ticket to complete the Rockets sound. However, as Nugent had before them, Badanjek and McCarty quickly realized Gilbert would be trouble for the band with his frequent drug and booze binges. The friction between them would go on for seven years before it eventually tore the band apart.
    Five studio albums produced several minor hits including a rocking rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well". Always a popular group in Detroit, and Michigan, The Rockets had gotten some attention outside of the state, but never really got the big break to become a true national act. The first album, Love Transfusion, was released in 1977. It failed to produce any hits. The 1979 self-titled release featured the hits, "Oh Well" and "Turn Up The Radio". This record also featured on bass, David Hood, one of the "Swampers" from the famous Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama. Muscle Shoals was mentioned in Lynyrd Skynyrd's southern rock anthem "Sweet Home Alabama". Also, this Rockets album was dedicated to Skynyrd members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines, who all perished in Skynyrds infamous 1977 plane crash. The third attempt came in 1980 with "No Ballads", "Desire" was a popular tune from this album. Next came the "Back Talk" album in '81 and then finally "Rocket Roll" in 1982. "Rollin' By The Record Machine" from this release was the last hit for the band. The final release, "Live Rockets" was recorded on New Years Eve 1982 at the Royal Oak Music Theatre near Detroit.

    Mint Tattoo - Mint Tattoo (1969 us rock with ex Blue Cheer) + 6 Tracks live Santa Monica 1968-01-12 - Flac)

    The Mint Tattoo was born as an offshoot of the legendary 60's proto punk acid band Blue Cheer. Bruce Stephens and Ralph (Burns) Kellogg had played together in Blue Cheer on band's self titled album in 1969, but after that one album, Stevens left the band to pursue other interests. Kellogg stayed on with Blue Cheer until the demise of the band in 1971, but during his tenure with Blue Cheer he reunited with Stevens along with drummer Gregg Thomas to form the band Mint Tattoo. Produced by James William Guercio (Chicago) and engineered by Phil Ramone in New York.

    An interesting oddity from 1968. Primarily blues based rock of above average quality, this group has almost progressive ambitions at times. While they don't always measure up, they do go in some fascinating directions. Unusual song structures and lyrical ideas share space with hard rockin' blues. It's no where near the quality of Jeff Beck's Truth, but this album grows on me a little more with each listen (I have an old vinyl copy I picked up second hand). The band obviously needed a little more time to grow, but they fell apart before they really had a chance to establish their sound and direction.
    Bruce Stephens' raspy vocals fit the rockers, but can wear thin on some of the other numbers. He's certainly no Steve Marriot. He and keyboardist Burns Kellog show up in Blue Cheer a year later to finish out the New! Improved!! album. Kellog would hang in for a few years and albums, but Stephens would depart before finishing B.C.'s self titled album of late '69, going on to form Pilot. I suppose the songs he did with B.C. can give you a hint at what this disc sounds like, and if you enjoy those you'll probably like this.I like this album, but it falls short of its potential.     Groundhogs - Live UK '76 (1976 uk progressive and hard blues rock - 2004 edition - Flac)

    Two years later after the Solid tour, it was again a totally changed band that the audience saw on stage. Actually, Tony McPhee had disbanded Groundhogs (he thought for ever) in 1975 and wanted to tour under his name such as had done Rory Gallagher after Taste. But it seemed it was too late and to tour he had to use again the name of the band. The main change was that Groundhogs was for the first time (and the last) a 4-member band, with a second guitar (the young and talented Dave Wellbelove, great name). And honestly, it's maybe the best live incarnation of the band you got here (yes, I know I also wrote that for the previous one, but let's say they're both are). Still less bluesy and more and more noisy, the music played here will surprise many who may imagine the band to be late bluesboomers. You'll be less surprised why Jack Endino has always been a fan of Tony McPhee). Another main change is the drumming. Mick Cook has often strange choices of drumming (not far from Terry Williams from Man) and this totally transforms the old Groundhogs repertoire, making them having a new youth. But actually, this live LP (released in 2004) could have been called Crosscut Saw Live since the band plays 5 songs from this album they had just recorded some weeks before and which is another underrated masterpiece. As insane as Solid was, but somewhat less muddy in its production and composition, lyrics are some of the best of Tony McPhee and all deal about bitter sentimental separation and are often quite hard. There are some Tony McPhee's peaks here (in the studio and the live LPs) such as "Eleventh Hour" (one highlight of all his career and one of the most moving song ever) and the extremely noisy and derelicted "Fulfilment" (listen to the grande finale and tell me that it's not thrilling). I put them both in streaming. Enjoy this fabulous piece of living music !!! (By Dkelvin)

    Who would thought the have made such a fine cover of "River Deep Mountain High". "Step inside love" is so fine romantic lyrical song, "No Resurrection" same and also "Heart full of Soul", "I believe to my Soul", so fine blues rock song and last song is such a big highlight. They should really deserve to be on the same train as Spirit or Linn County. (By Uros)

    An hard rock group formed by Mark Stein after Vanilla Fudge. If you like "Rock Music" you WILL love Boomerang's self titled one and only album. Forget the fact that this was recorded 31 years ago, like any great music this is timeless!
    You might recognize Mark Stein's name from the Vanilla Fudge. Gone are the complex arrangements and psychedelic effects that were a trade mark of the Fudge. But Stein's distinctive vocals and his awesome Hammond B3 organ sounds are still here.
    Guitarist Richard Rameriz was amazingly only 16 years old when this album was recorded. However he plays like a veteran of many years and studio sessions.
    "Juke It", "Hard Times", "Mockingbird", "Cynthia Fever" and "The Peddler" are solid rockers that will stick with you. "Fisherman" is a lesson on greed. The ballad "Brother's Comin' Home" is a tribute to returning war veterans, something that was rare in that time of our history.
    The only drawback to this album is there is not enough of it! Only 7 tunes...but what tunes they are. This album is a classic in the progressive rock history.(By Ray Hollingsworth)

    Hookfoot was a quintet formed at the end of the '60s as a recording unit by a half-dozen session players associated with Dick James' publishing and later with his DJM Records label. They never made much of an impression on the charts, despite their work being licensed to A&M Records, through which they released four LPs in the U.S.A. Ian Duck (vocals, harmonica), Dave Glover (bass), Roger Pope (drums, vocals), and Caleb Quaye (guitar, vocals) were the original lineup, with Bob Kulick (guitar, vocals) coming in alongside Quaye, and Fred Gandy joining on bass later.(Bruce Eder)

    Does anyone remember how good this group was besides me? This is the fourth release (after Hookfoot, Good Times A Comin, Communication, and Roaring),that I can find from one of the most underated groups from England in the early 70's;Hookfoot. Eight live tracks(5 from the various studio releases) that show what a great band these guys were! A talented guitar band led by Caleb Quaye, and Ian Duck, this four piece band with Roger Pope and Dave Glover/Freddy Gandy could play it all; loud and funky rock n'roll,electric or acoustic blues, combined with great lyrics and superb musicianship. If you can find this disc check it out, because this may be the only Hookfoot music you'll be able to listen to on CD anytime soon. It's a decent recording(considering the time it was made),and shows a "live" sound most fans like me never got to hear. See if you agree with me, that these guys played great music that sounded like nothing else from England that was being played in 1972- it'll make you feel young again!!(By wwwperkmp)
